Sasa quelpaertensis leaf extract (SQE) has shown various biological effects in several tissues. However, the pharmacological effect of SQE has never been investigated yet in the central nervous system. Therefore, we investigated whether the hot water extract from Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai suppresses lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 100 ng/ml)-induced microglial activation. The results demonstrated that SQE significantly reduced NO production in LPS-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells. In addition, SQE showed free radical scavenging activity in DPPH assay. Taken together, these results suggest that SQE may have a therapeutic potential against neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration through suppression of excess microglial activation-mediated neuronal cell death.
